Five Women Writers Who Changed The World

This book was published in 2017. Lyndall Gordon is a prize winning biographer who in this book examines the lives of Virginia Woolf, Olive Schreiner, George Eliot, Emily Bronte and Mary Shelley and show how their status as 'Outsiders' affected their work and their world.

For George Eliot fans the section on her is fascinating, suggesting that Marian Evans was obliged to leave Warwickshire and its stultifying atmosphere in order to write; and that even at times of family crisis when she might have been expected to return, she found reasons not to. I was also impressed by Lyndall's even handed judgement on John Chapman. An interesting read - and that is before you read about the other four women.
