The George Eliot Fellowship
George Eliot Study Day
Programme for the day
'Examining Daniel Deronda' by Dr Pamela Mason
This will be a superb introduction to the day and will include references to the BBC Andrew Davies production. Dr Mason runs the very successful literary days at the Birmingham and Midland Institute.
'Nations & Empires in Daniel Deronda' by Dr John Rignall
John's expertise on George Eliot and Europe will guarantee an interesting examination of this aspect of the novel, at a time when nationhood is again important in the world.
1:00 - 2:00 - Buffet Lunch
'How George Eliot Prepared to Handle 'The Jewish Question' in Daniel Deronda' by Laura Ball
George Eliot broke new ground with her sympathetic handling of 'The Jewish Question'. In this paper, Laura shares some of her work on how George Eliot researched the issues before incorporating them into the novel.
'Gwendolen' by Vivienne Wood
Fellowship members will read excerpts from Viv's adaptation of Daniel Deronda, as a prelude to a full production later this year, hopefully in a splendid aristocratic setting.
