George Eliot Country Tour

One of the best ways to learn about George Eliot is to come on one of the George Eliot Country Tours that the Fellowship organises. The tour takes you to the sites associated with the author. Full details of the itinerary will be sent when you book. It includes two hours at Arbury Hall, a visit to South Farm, Astley, Griff House and Chilvers Coton. It is anticipated that the tour will end at 7.00pm. It starts at Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre, Avenue Road, Nuneaton CV11 4LU at 12.00pm.

The picture to the right shows Chilvers Coton Parish Church where George Eliot was baptised and her family worshipped. It is opposite Chilvers Coton Heritage Centre where the tour starts. If there is time we also include a drive into the centre of Nuneaton to see places associated with Scenes of Clerical Life but our schedule is tight so we cannot guarantee it.

Participants will find the day enjoyable and interesting. There is not a lot of walking but there is quite a lot of standing, especially at Arbury. You do not need to know George Eliot's books to enjoy the day but we hope you will want to buy and read some of her work at the end of the day. For those who have read her, the chance to see her early home and the places associated with her early novels is always rewarding. There will be printed programme for every participant which includes some of the readings you will hear during the tour.

You are taken by coach from venue to venue. A bit of emergency rations might keep hunger at bay. We provide water. There is a chance to buy tea and cakes at Arbury, depending on how busy they are - it is bank holiday.

You are accompanied by knowledgeable guides from the George Eliot Fellowship who make every effort to ensure a memorable and special day.

Unfortunately, because of rising prices we have had to increase our charge this year. If we fill the 29 seater coach we will cover our costs.
