The Annual wreathlaying event takes place every summer at the obelisk in the George Eliot Memorial Gardens, alongside the river in Nuneaton. The obelisk has been there since it was moved from Arbury Park in the 1950s and every year we have a guest of honour to lay a chaplet or wreath on behalf of the Fellowship.

There are usually 15 or 16 groups from the area who lay a wreath. The Mayor of the Borough will lay a wreath on behalf of the residents of the borough. This year our guest of honour is Saul Bache. Saul is known to many for his wonderful acting as Felix Holt in the adaptation by Vivienne Wood of the novel which went to the Edinburgh Fringe last year to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its publication. It was also performed to two sold out audiences at Bedworth Arts Centre last September. Saul is a member of Simon Winterman's Sudden Impulse Theatre Company with whom the Fellowship has had close links for many years.

As well as the usual institutions laying wreaths we are hoping to have some children from Whitestone Infants to lay a wreath for the first time.

Esther And Felix

Saul Bache as Felix Holt with Sophie Sharratt as Esther Lyon taken at Edinburgh, August 2016.

The event includes some readings from or about George Eliot appropriate to the occasion and the whole event lasts about 40 minutes. We then repair to Nuneaton Museum for tea and cakes.
